Rule of thumb: When skin is reactive, the best routine is usually the simplest routine. Reduce variables first; add slowly later.

The three-step baseline

AM: rinse or gentle cleanse → moisturizer → sunscreen

PM: gentle cleanse → moisturizer

If you sting easily: cleanse only at night; rinse in the morning.

How to choose each step (quick checklist)

Cleanser

  • Gentle, fragrance-free
  • No “squeaky clean” feeling
  • Technique matters: lukewarm water, fingertips, pat dry

Moisturizer

  • Fragrance-free, minimal extras
  • Barrier-support ingredients (often glycerin/ceramides)
  • Apply right after cleansing to reduce tightness

Sunscreen

  • Broad-spectrum, something you’ll wear daily
  • Many redness-prone folks prefer mineral (tolerance varies)
  • Moisturize first if sunscreen stings

Patch testing (the safety valve)

  • Test 1 product at a time
  • Small area for 2–3 days before full-face
  • If it burns repeatedly, stop and reset
